Hip Hip Hooray 1/24/09

Hello all-
Keyboard fixed!

And so, an update from yesterday and today - huge progress. Yesterday we arrived in the ICU and were pleasantly surprised to find Kerry sitting up in a 'cadiac chair' - tears of joy from all of us. She was strapped into her body armour which she must wear whenever she is upright for the next several months - it is a plastic 'shell' that velcros around her entire upper chest and back (this is required for her broken back)- miserably unpleasant. She endured and the nurses were so pleased.

She remains off the vent yet has the trach - she struggles coughing and chokes on the phlegm that gets stuck in the trach tube - copious greenies. This sounds all gurgly and icky so John and I suction her regulary. The coughing makes her very upset as it hurts her throat terribly as well as her chest with all of its healing ribs. Her ICU team felt she was ready to be transferred to a rehab facility - this whole process moved incredibly fast, and within hours we had a nurse from a facility eveluating Kerry, clearing things with insurance and arranging transport ASAP - WOW!!

The facility is the only one of it's kind from Tampa to Miami - it is a critical care rehab hospital called Ridge Lake - conveniently in Sarasota (only 30 mins from K and John's home!) It is essentially a hospital that only has ICU beds and rehab facilities in it...it is not a nursing home - hip hip hooray! She was transported there this morning via ambulance.

J, mom and I met her there - the 25 minute drive there was so much nicer than the 1.25 hour drive that it was to the St. Petes hospital! It is a lovely new facility and K got a private room - huge with a bright sunny window and lots of walls to decorate with art from the kids! It took a while to settle her in - lots of anxiety from mom and John about this new move as they were worried she would not get the attention she needed being tucked away in a room and all...Not the case after all.

Quickly and efficiently doctors. nurses, respiratory therapists and X-rays techs descended on her. The primary doc and pulmonary physician were delighted to have me give them a complete review of Kerry's mechanism of injury, injuries, surgeries, treatments, meds, progress etc...this helped them get a better understanding of her whole situation. Her chart is huge and this gave them a jump start on reviewing her case and planning her care.

I was completely impressed with their immediate attention to detail, and plan of action. They both articulated what they foresee accomplishing in the next several days/weeks with Kerry and what actions will be taken to achieve her recovery. They will be bringing in an infectious disease doctor to watch her like a hawk and keep her infection free (we are all nervous about MRSA these days - "staph infections'), wound mangement specialist for the potentially dangerous wounds on her body (a large necrotic wound on left upper arm, heel, head, and incisional sites), an endocrinologist for her hypothyroid and calcium disorder, an orthopod and on and on and on! They cultured (sent a specimen to the lab to be evaluated) her lung gunk (we call that sputum), urine (she has had a tube in her 'bits below' for 5 weeks!!), and wounds - they changed and cleaned tubes (2 in her chest, one in her nose, one in her girl bits, and her trach in her neck) and the dressings on everrything. They are efficient, friendly, reassuring and organized. This made all of us very happy to say the least!

After reviewing her massive plan of care with the staff, helping them change Kerry's bed, photograph wounds, prop her on pillows, clean, powder and lotion her...she was ready to sleep. Mom and I got some flowers in town for her room and I decorated the walls with pictures and cards - with Ipod next to her bed playing quiet music, dim lighting, plan of action, resting Kerry, we all felt a wave of relief...she is on to Chapter 2!

She's on her way to recovery. This is a girl who they expected to die the night of her accident. This is the girl who fought her way back from the dark. This is the girl who said yes when given another go at breathing. This is the girl who won't let 3 of 4 broken extremities stop her from moving. This is the girl who has a will to live and live and live!

This is a girl that has a HUGE support system sending her their well wishes, good thoughts, energy, love and the fortitude she needs for all that she must and has already accomplished.

For this, we continue to thank you. Words can not not express our gratitude, our sincere love and our eternal appreciation for you!
With love, and no tears in my (our) eyes tonight - Kyla, John, Lynn, Kerry and the rest of our family too!
Dear Kerry,
Well my dear you are in a new temporary home. I know it is not what you would have wished for, but unfortunately it is what is needed now to prepare you for going home to John and your dogs.( I heard you have 2, but I know nothing about them, and I am sure they miss you terribly). Maybe, if they are well behaved dogs, the nursing home would allow John to bring one at a time to visit you. My god-mother was in a nursing home and they allowed dogs to visit on weekends. I don't know how your Mom and sis would think about this, but as a dog lover myself, I know the bonds we create with our pets are veru special. It is certainly something to think about....How about it John?At least Kyla or John could bring in a photo of them for you to have close by.

I'm sure that the actual move was very painful physically for you. I am so glad that Kyla is there for you and your mother. My thoughts are with you all daily. I know you are a very spiritual and kinda 'new age' person..........I approve of all the things your friend brings to you....the healing crystals etc, everything that is important to you and is reinforced by others just adds strength to your beliefs. Afterall, what you think, is what is! and what you attract.

Know that there are so many people wishing you the best in their own ways. Those that believe in God and those that are spiritual.............it is all for you and whatever works .

Sleep well, and regenerate all the muscles and cells .....we are all here and waiting to see you home again with your loved ones, and perhaps the new friend you have made on this blog.

Love ,
Jeff's Mom, Carole
Kyla and Lynn,

I'm so happy that the music brought a smile to Kerry's face. I was excited to hear that Kerry is out of intensive care. One step closer. I really think that the music on the I-Pod must have been enjoyable compared to the beeps of the intensive care room. Kerry couldn't ask for a better mom and sister. Keep up the good work and I hope that Kerry keeps progressing.

Hugs and Kisses,

Natalie
Yea Kerry. We are so happy to hear Kerry is doing so well. I know all of you that have been there with her know how significant this progress is. Lynn, I am so thrilled to hear that you sounded so happy....you deserve the wonderful news. Glad Kyla and John are there to share this milestone with you. YEA...My thoughts are with you. I hope Kerry will be able to talk with you all soon, if she hasn't already. How lucky she is to have all your love and support. I am sure she knows you have been there all along. Be well.

Love, Rae

Great news.Kerry girl you are AWSOME!!

Having closely followed Kerry's progress and wishing I had the words to express just how affected I have been by all the news, outpouring of love, strength, tears, etc. I want to say that though Deb Buren is unknown to me, I could copy and paste her blog and post my name to it. She has so skillfully stated the many thought I could not put into word. Well done Deb, hope sometime in the future to be able to thank you in person ...Well done indeed!
Now Kyla, about your typing......Could it be the keyboard?? a second glass of celebration over the good news?? or just a moment of exhaustion. You have been ever faithful to everyone, and really need to take time for yourself. My love to all of you as you keep up the progress reports and support each other. Thank you, Carla and Jules in California
THAT IS GREAT NEWS that Aunt RO has posted about Kerry being approved for a transfer to a rehab facility. That is the progress we've all been praying for!!

Back again. Just spoke with Lynn and the move will be tomorrow. The transfer was not going to be able to be done until midnight and so it will be done tomorrow. Lynn said it been a great relief -similar to giving birth!!!! She also said the pulmonary doctor said Kerry has made great progress in the last two days...... Hallelujah!!!!

Aunt Ro
For those of us who have been following this journey of Kerry. I just got the greatest news from Lynn. Kerry was approved by Blue Cross for the rehab hospital and according to Lynn will be moved there today. What joy in the hearts of everybody to hear this. As we all know, the blogs were certainly tear jerking and now we can all smile. It will be a long journey, but this brave wonderful girl WILL make it. Let's all remember to keep her in our thoughts and prayers......... I am convinced that this has been a major force in her progress forward.

Aunt Ro
Morning greetings to all! Especially to Kerry, Lynn, Kyla and John at the bedside, (as well as to Marty, Hayden, and all of your extended, loving family... )

Although I don't frequently blog...I do frequently, throughout each day, think about each of you, and I am both sending healing thoughts your way and interceding in prayer and petition for you!!

I do not pretend to understand why this world is such a hard place, filled with uncertainty, tragedy, pain, and injustice. This is certainly evident in the circumstances surrounding the accident Kerry has suffered, and thereby created this uncharted territory the entire family must travel. My heart aches for the pain and myriad other emotions you all feel; I am sure I am not the only one who has been moved to tears by your ordeal!

Yet, at the same time, as we all in some way try to walk through this with you all, through your emails and the blog, I am amazed. Thank you for sharing this difficult, painful journey with us...I am sorry it has taken Kerry's accident to reconnect many of us with you all, but for that I am grateful. The depth of the love shared by your family is so abundantly evident to us all. Truly, it is mirrored by the outpouring of love from family and friends around the globe! I know the fear for a loved one's life and well-being...yet, we are told, "Perfect love casts out fear"...I see such evidence of not only the love you all have for one another, and we for all of you, but also of God's love, care, protection, and provision for Kerry! As a nurse practitioner, I am amazed that she survived the accident! Miracles do happen, and I think we are witnessing one, albeit an arduous, long, road to wellness.

I am so happy that Kerry is off the vent, and smiling to music, and pray, my dear cousin, that soon you will able to eat, drink, and be merry, with less and less pain; and more and more assurance of your increasing strength and wellbeing!

I pray, too, that you, and all who love you most dearly and desperately, will be comforted; that the peace that passes all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds, and give rest for your souls; and that you will find joy in the midst of these incredibly trying times.

I wish I were closer to Florida or Ohio, so I could give personal hugs and kisses to all you whom I long so dearly to reach out and touch!! My crazy mother, Toni Stafford Buren, used to say, over the phone, when she wanted to give us a hug, "Now, wrap your free arm around your body, and I'll do the same...then, on three, we'll squeeze...really hard!...ready?...1...2...3... MMMMMMM...and we'd laugh!" If I could, I would hug each of you, but Kerry only very gently, right now...I do so love you all!! Tears are in my eyes, as I write to you all...both with sorrow for your suffering, and joy for your love and Kerry's healing...love, kisses, hugs, bright healing light and so much love from-Deb

Every day a little step

Kerry,

I can't help but hope that in the next few weeks you will be reading this blog yourself, and will gain insight and draw strength from the outpouring of good wishes from so many people. You have touched many people's hearts in your lifetime, and will continue to do so for a LONG time.

I got off the phone last night with Lynn, and I was so uplifted to hear the hope, instead of the tears. It has been so heart-wrenching for us all, but I feel positive that you are on the path to healing. Every day there are little steps that are getting you to a good place. It will be a long road, but you have alot of support to help you get there. Hayden has been to see you, Kyla is there now, Jen will be there next week and I will be there in February. We all dearly want to help you along this road to recovery!

I just sent a little package in the mail for your birthday next Tuesday-- everything is hospital-room friendly! We miss you!

Kerry update 1/22/09... A better day!

Goodnight friends and family -

Cold here in Florida - 30s at night and only 50s during the day (hell of alot better than the 5 degress we left in Ohio!) - all the locals are shivering whilest we northerners are wallowing in it!

A better day spent with Kerry.  She is still off the ventilator yet remains trached (tube in her neck for breathing).  The collar of the trach in her throat was deflated somewhat meaning that she is doing more of the breathing hereself.  Weaning her to more breathing on her own is a process that will take several days. She spent a lot of time today coughing up copious quantities of yellow yuck from her very wet lungs - this requireds us to suction her frequentlly to clear her mouth and throat.  This coughing really hurts Kerry but is so essential to her recovery.  (Kyla and John are the master suctioners - yaya hates it!)

She had an outstanding young nurse today named Shannon who did an appraisal/evaluation for Kyla, John  and myself  covering Kerry from the psoriasis in her scalp to the sore on the back of her heel (in other words, head to toe).  She explained and gave us outlooks on each inch of her injured body.  For this I was immensely grateful and given so much comfort.  Sadly, it took asking for this review from the nurse to get it - you really have to pull teeth to get any info  it seems.  We feel better about what is going on now that we have a clear understanding of Kerry's entire situation and plan of care.

She went 5.5 hours this afternoon on one dose of pain meds when she was getting them once an hour just a week ago.  Nurse Shannon walked us through the pain med weaning process as well which is essential to her recovery.  After several days as she is, she will learn to swallow again as she has been suctioned for many many days now.  She willl then be reintroduced to liquid, then soft foods and how to swallow as her throat will be somewhat damaged by all this trach stuff.  Then we start speech therapy to find her voice again.

All of the bones are slowly recovering, swelling is coming down, road rash is resolving save for one nasty necrotic area on her arm (that means icky dead skin over large wound that is being cleared with a cream made of papaya juice which acts like maggots eating away the dead tissue) - reacall, maggots used  to really clean up wounds!!!!  Sutures and staples are all out (many many many!).  Today I (Kyla ) added soft music on my ipod dcking station to her bedside - this really brought a smile to her face and eyes - this sure beats the 28 days of beeps and blips she has been listening to!  Also hung up lots of pictures and drawings from our wee ones  - brightend the room and the atmosphere....

tomorrow we start Starbucks, red wine and snacks - this will get her back in no time flat I am sure!  Things are looking up for yaya - no tears tonight!

Many thanks for your continued well wishes - they honestly make a world of difference!
Love, Kyla and Lynn

Emails to share...thank you everyone!!!

Lynn, the best thing I can give you right now is a verbal HUG.  I'll deliver the real thing in person next time I see you.  I know what you mean about the bat...the injustice of the non-accountability going on re the accident is just beyond belief.

Hi Lynn and possibly Kyla reading this email.  I am checking my home email account which I have not opened in over 3 months.  Paige has been reading me her emails from each of you over the past month and I can't begin to tell you how much I think of Kerry and what she is going through.  My heart, prayers and thoughts go out to Kerry and all of you as I can't imagine how hard it is to see your daughter/sister/wife/family member go through this without being able to do much.
If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to ask.  Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you and I think of you all often.  Keep strong, keep positive and give my love to Kerry.

Lynn:  Hope you can feel this "great, big" hug from me.  As you have said, it tears a mom apart not to be able to provide for a child, no matter what the age.  Thank God that Kerry has you, Marty and Kyla to be with her besides her husband and rest of the family.  Just keep close to her bedside, tell her that you love her and pray that recovery (although long and painful) will come along steadily.  We will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers.  Spoke with Kyla's husband last night and we are signed up on Kerry's blog.  So happy to be able to keep up with all the news and progress.  Hang in there, old friend.  The sun comes up every day and there is always hope!!!  The thoughts and prayers of all your family and friends will see all of you through this long ordeal.  Know that you are all in our hearts.  Love, Karen Grasser (mom's friend from 1st grade)
---------------------------------------------------------------
My thoughts and prayers have been for Kerry. To think of the pain that you all are experiencing makes me very sad.  I pray for full recoverery. We all hope for happier days.  Stay strong and all will work out.
Sincerely

Oh Lynn,
My heart aches for you.  I have been thinking of you and Kerry and everyone non stop since we spoke on Monday.  There is not one ounce of sense in all of this.  I feel like I just want to hit something!  I wish you could feel the arms of so many of us as we stand at your side emotionally.  I think all of us who have known the privilege of parenthood also fear the enormous pain involved as we watch one of our children suffer as Kerry is suffering.  While I have not had to stand by helplessly as you have, I can only imagine the heartbreak.
You are a strong woman Lynn and you will get through this as will Kerry but in the meantime, the pain is unbearable.  I believe that having you and Kyla at her bedside is making a difference.  I think we transfer our energy to those who need it, hence you drive home feeling like you were shot at and hit, only to do the same thing the next day and the day after that.
Please know that I think of all of you each day and send positive thoughts and whatever energy I have your way.
Love,
Sally Winter (Berea friend)

Kyla - please give your mom and yourself a hug from me.  I am sitting here in tears wishing that there was more we or anyone could do for Kerry.  Much love and many prayers....Paige Taliak (cousin-in-law)
--------------------------------------------
Lynn, Kyla, and family... we continue our prayers for Kerry and keep her in our thoughts every minute of every day!  Although she seems to be inching along... at least it is in the right direction toward recovery.  GO KERRY!  We are wishing her positive movement each day in hopes that little by little she gets better and stronger.
Lots of love~ Suzy Taliak (cousin)

Kyla,
Please tell your Mom that we remembered Kerry in a prayer group on Tuesday.  The members were all Baptists except me (not much else here in the Bible belt) that I volunteer with at the local pregnancy center.  If anyone needs a respite we have plenty of room--I think of all of you often and hope that you see a little light in that dark, dreary tunnel soon.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop.
Barb Goist (MBI friend)
Karen and I just read Lynn's latest account of Kerry's condition and it is heartbreaking. We are earnestly praying for Kerry to recover. It is truly a tragedy for such a young women to suffer as she has been. May God provide her comfort and protection as she heals. We will add Kerry to our church's prayer list.

Kerry, I am so happy to hear you continue to make progress. How wonderful to have so many who care and love you deeply. Your mother is so impressed with your strength. When we spoke the other day she was such a proud mother-in-law commenting on the endless deep love that John shows you. She couldn't be happier in your choice of one fabulous husband. I have seen Kyla recently too. She too is so very proud of you and was eager to come visit. I hope she doesn't give you too much red wine, despite the fact that red wine is a favorite. I hope you enjoy the book she is bringing down to read to you and that the music she will play will help you dance in your heart and bring a smile to your face. I am so happy you are breathing more on your own. I hope you can get those tubes removed soon and are able to eat some favorite foods and talk with those you love. I think of you always. You inspire me to be strong....thank you. I look forward to hearing continued progress reports. I love you Kerry; be well, stay strong.

All my love and hugs, RAE

Dear Taliak Family,
Recently, I heard from my mom about Kerry's terrible accident down in Florida, and I was very shocked and saddened to hear about it. Although it looks as if she is making great progress, she's a fighter!
And I would like to say thank you for the updates on her condition, Marty, and Lynn; and Kyla for starting this blog. It's nice to hear about what's going on at home :)
I am sending lots of positive energy to you!
Best Wishes!

Honey,
It seems like endless days of worry, concern, and "feeling the pain", for all involved. But what's coming to her, from everyone involved, will move her toward recovery as fast as anything.
Give her a very gentle hug from Deb and me.

Dear Kyla,
Thank you for today's update.  I am so glad Hayden was able to visit his older sister and to personally view the situation.  The road rash must be horrific to see as well as seeing the respirator, the tubes, etc.  I know your mom will be so happy to have you join her at the hospital in St. Petersburg.
Too bad Uncle Dave and I are not going to Florida this year as we would certainly drive to St. Pete and even though we could not see Kerry, we could at least get a feel for the hospital and the environs.  Two years ago Dave and I stayed with Kerry and John one night on either my birthday (the 24th) or Kerry's birthday (the 26th).  We each bought a cake, so that evening after sitting in their pool, the four of us had two pieces of cake and enjoyed a lovely evening together.
We recognize the need to give blood and it is wise of you to remind everyone to do so.  We never know who it is that we can help by just doing this one act of kindness.
We will wish you well as you head to Florida.  Give John a big hug for us.  We can only imagine how he is suffering.
Hugs,
Aunt Mary and Uncle Dave
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kyla,
Thank you so much for the updates.  I pray each and every day for Kerry, John and all the family.  I know God hears me cuz it's with the rosary your mom brought me from the Vatican.

I sent an e-mail to you to pass on to John for his birthday.  I hope you got it, if not please let me know.
Please keep strong.  Your family is wonderful and remember to let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
Love ya,Cookie

Dear Kyla,

Thanks for all the updates.  Rich and I are going to New Mexico and Colorado for a few weeks.  We will keep in touch with the blog and your emails.  I am sorry I have not blogged but I have kept in touch with John by mail.  Please send the How to Blog info again to me............sorry I'm such a dinosaur.

Kyla,
I have been in Jamaica for the last two weeks with students, and even now I am hard pressed with
work responsibilities.  But I do need to take a moment to let you know that I appreciate all of the
work you are doing to keep the family updated.  Kerry and John are in my prayers, and I will
continue to follow your updates.  I cannot begin to describe the emotional landscape I have
experienced in reading the reports, and so I can only begin to imagine how difficult it has been for
you all.
Amy and I are hoping that all of this will eventually turn out for the best, but until then, please
know that we are thinking of you all.
With love and prayers,
Greg and Amy

I am glad to hear Kerry is doing better and is even breathing some on her own.  Bless you for keeping every one up to date on Kerry. I hope you and all your family is doing all right. I am worried about all of you!  Tell you mom I send my love. I keep you all in my prayers often.
Thank you again for all you do Kyla. I know when Kerry is able to see the web site she will be so overwhelmed by all that write on her blog.
 Love you always, Robin

Dear Lynn,
My love and heart go out to you daily. I know as a mother who loves deeply her children and family, how terribly difficult this is for you. I empathize and even feel your pain, for if it was either of my children I would be devastated by every single thing I couldn't do to ease their discomfort and pain. I also admire you for your strength and fortitude to go through this with the grace and dignity that you have. I would probably be a basket -case..... If there is anything I can do for you, just let me know.

My love and admiration to you...........keep on with your strength, and take an occasional bath with candles and meditate...........I know having Kyla there is a great blessing for you...

Lynn is back in Florida

After 5 days in Cleveland for a brief respite from the very emotional ICU next to Kerrys bed I am back at my post in Bayfront Medical Center. Kyla is here with me now and this is a wonderful relief for me as Marty had to stay home for a couple of weeks. Today was very difficult, moreso than before I left. Kerry is fully awake, getting no more sedative drip, and only pain meds but less frequently than before so she is therefore experiencing much much pain. This is evident on her face many many times. She has no voice as she is still trached altho she has been breathing without the vent and only occasional O2 doses. She tries constantly to speak only able to move her lips for words with no sound and none of us have been very successful in our lip reading skills. We did get "I am hungry". She is getting nutrition via a nasal gastric tube up her nose, down to her tummy. Tears a moms heart out to not provide food for kids of any age methinks. Nutritionally she is good, but she is experiencing hunger pain.

She must remain trached until they are posistive she can breath alone. Until then, no food, no drink, no words. Chest tubes remain in place until trach is taken out. She now has a serious case of yeast infection (all we girls know how good those feel), also some thrush in her mouth which is also a form of yeast and uncomfortable, psoriasis in her scalp and a very suspicious sore on her heel that we are hoping is not a decubitous as those have VERY serious side effects. She appeared to really cry out several times today in pain, her mouth and eyes did but again no vocalization at all. She writhes and twists in apparent pain. This has been a horrible day for me altho I guess we are moving forwad a bit. Be still my aching head, heart, stomach, mind. Thank you all for your continuing notes of encouragement. They mean a great deal to me. LYNN

medical update

Kerry has been off the respirator for more than 24 hours now. Kyla and Lynn are here visiting now. They might take out a chest tube in a few days. Still a long ways to go,but a little closer every day.

Thoughts from Berea

Great News! Way to go Kerry!
Thanks for your messages John, we are thinking of you both sending healing thoughts.
Take care.
Love, Sarah & Teddy

Small Steps

I have just hung up the phone with John and have a huge smile on my face. I am so happy that each day Kerry seems to be making progress in a positive direction; first getting through her surgeries and now each day tolerating breathing on her own for longer periods of time. It is a long walk, but each step takes us closer to recovery. Hang in there John and give Kerry a big kiss from all of us!!
Hello everyone,
Today is monday. Iarrived at the hospital around 11:00 AM. Kerry was awake when I came in.
She does recognize people and does respond to you if you ask her to move her feet or stick out her tongue when you ask. Chastity was her nurse today. She is a wonderfull nurse with such a gentle touch. All of Kerry's vital signs are good and they are keeping a very close watch for her calcium and sugar levels. Kerry was not using the respirator from8:00AM till I left at 4pm.
Marjorie came for about 3hours today and she did do a little bit of Raiki for Kerry. Kerry will give her and Chastity a big smile. Kerry still has a very long way to go for recovery,so for now we take everything one day at a time.

Thank you all,
John

7 and a half hours!!!!!

You go, girl! 7 and a half hours!

Hello everyone,
I wish to thank all of you for all of your support and love for Kerry. All your comments and messages mean a great deal. Today Kerry breathed on her own for 7 1/2 hours. I am trying to
learn more about writing on the computer. I hope this message gets to the right places.

Sincerely,
John H.

Keep Breathing Kerry!

I just got the news that Kerry was breathing on her own for 3 hours yesterday, and for even longer today! Keep up the good work Kerry! Berit
