After 4 hours in surgery Kerry's neurosurgeon came out to the waiting room with a smile on his face and a thumbs up sign!! Kerry will be pleased to know she had very wide spinal pedicles to place the rod and screws in. The bone graft and fusion were perfect and the spine is stable.. She did well and will be able to be to sit up to 45 degrees in bed.A full body brace will be fitted later next week before she can be ambulated and will be necessary for at least 3 months.
Her extremity surgery will be on Monday and then the rehabilitation can begin. One would hope the tracheostomy balloon can be deflated later in the week so she can communicate. She is much more alert but has no memory whatsoever of the last several weeks but is still quite vague and sleeping so much. With 11 rib fractures, 8 vertebrae fractures, a humeral fracture-dislocation, bilateral wrist and forearm fractures and lower extremity fractures she is still in a world of pain that must be addressed with mind altering drugs. Was quite happy when she saw a favorite coworker yesterday.
She isn't out of the woods yet but she can see daylight ahead!!! ,and so can Lynn. No tears today so things must be better. Tears of joy are not counted.
